Kyal graduated from Elanora High School in 2003. After graduating Kyal was contemplating making surfboards for a living. However, he decided to start a carpentry apprenticeship. Also, not long his graduation, Kyal met Kara, the person who was to become his future wife and partner in a successful home renovation and television career. He and Kara, enjoyed window shopping in antique stores and started purchasing cheap second-hand furniture that had good bones and restoring it, sanding back an old timber table, chests and book shelves – ‘making old pieces new again.’ Kyal and Kara knew pretty early on that they wanted a home to renovate. And to help achieve this goal Kyal started a second job in the evenings working at a local service station.

In October 2008, Kyal and Kara, bought their first home. A little fibro shack on a beautiful 714sqm block. There was nothing special about the house except for the fact that (along with the bank), they now owned it! Kyal and Kara saw potential to renovate and extend and create a beautiful family home (for someone else). They began sketching up ideas for a renovation to turn their little shack into a four-bedroom home with a study and two living areas, including a master bedroom wing. Towards the end of 2013 Kyal and Kara had finished their renovation and spent three months travelling South America and upon return were ready for a new challenge!

The new challenge for Kyal and Kara came in the form of the TV show, The Block. Kyal and Kara starred in the eighth season of The Block – Fan V Faves in 2014, and proved they were serious competitors with their innovative designing skills. "Our friends helped us film an audition video that obviously made some kind of impression, because never in our wildest hopes or dreams, did we expect it to change our life the way it has, and what a ride it has been!"
